A 15-year-old Senior Secondary School (SSS) 3 student (name withheld) has been discharged and acquitted by a Magistrate Court, after she was accused of the murder of her father’s 51-year-old friend.
Magistrate Philip Ojo of the Magistrates Court in Yaba area of Lagos struck out a murder charge filed against the teenager following an adivice from the office of the Lagos State Directorate of Public Prosecution (DPP), Channels TV News reports.
The State Criminal Intelligence and Investigation Department (SCIID) on March 24, alleged that the girl stabbed Mr Babtunde Ishola to death on March 7, 2020.
The deceased man was said to be employed as a guard in a community school and lived alone.
The police said the girl’s act contravened Section 225 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State and remanded the student at the Lagos State Correctional Home for Girls, in Idi Araba.
However, at the proceedings Yesterday, (10, June 2020), Magistrate Ojo intimated that the court had received the DPP’s report.
He said that there were “insufficient facts to establish a prima facie case of murder against the suspect.”
The minor was then acquitted and discharged by the magistrate.
The girl’s Parent who spoke after the judgment, thanked the Lagos state government and OPD for the efforts in coming to their rescue with free legal services.
