Experts in the United Kingdom Say they have found a ‘cheap and widely available drug’ called dexamethasome with a remarkable potential of saving the lives of coronavirus patients.
UK experts say the low-dose steroid drug is a major breakthrough in the fight against the deadly coronavirus.
It was reported that the risk of death was cut by a third for patients on ventilators and by a fifth for those on oxygen through the drug.
Death rate due to coronavirus varies by place and population, with factors like average age, Country’s testing capacity and government responses, influencing the death rates.
The report says however, that about 19 out of 20 coronavirus patients recover without hospital admission.
Most of those admitted also recover, but may require oxygen or mechanical ventilation.
These high risk patients are the ones dexamethasone appears to help.
Researchers say, the drug could have saved up to 5,000 lives in UK if it had been used to treat patients since the start of the pandemic.
Over 8 million coronavirus cases have been recorded worldwide with over 400,000 deaths recorded.
