It’s Whitsun today, also known as pentecost.
Pentecost initially was celebrated as a festival under the name ‘feast of weeks’ by the Jews only. The feast of weeks was celebrated seven weeks after the feast of first fruits (Deut. 16:9-10).
In the law, that is, Old agreement, the name of this feast was called feast of weeks but in the New Testament it got the new name – PENTECOST.
While the Passover was demonstrated in the New Testament as the Crucifixion and Death of the Lord, the Feast of first fruits was demonstrated in the New Testament as the Resurrection of the Lord (Easter).
Thus, as a result of the name ‘feast of first fruits’ in the Old agreement; JESUS was referred to as the ‘First fruit of all that have fallen asleep.’
Pentecost is referred to as the event that occurred 50 days after Jesus’ resurrection and 10 days after His ascension into heaven in which the about 120 disciples of Jesus were endued with the Holy Spirit in the upper room at Jerusalem (Acts 2:1; 1:5,8), thus the beginning of the Church.
PENTECOST is also called Whitsun. Pentecost has a central theme ‘Baptism in the Holy Spirit’.
The fact that PENTECOST means 50 days after Easter does not mean that it will only occur 50days after Easter.
However, the FIRST EVER PENTECOST had to be so, in order to reveal the reality of the shadows that was in the Old Testament. Today, Pentecost can happen 365days in a year not just in Jerusalem but also where you are right now.
Before Christ died, He began to tell His twelve disciples that He would die, this statement made the disciples of the Lord troubled and perplexed.
They were in sore displeasure of what was going to happen to them after Christ’s decease( John 16:6).They asked questions in their mind like;
Who will answer the hard riddles and questions the Pharisees will put to us?
Who will tell us how to preach?
Who will help us to cast out tougher demons when we are unable?
Who will encourage us when we fail?
Who will preach to the fish that we might catch when we must have toiled all night?
Who will fast and pray on our behalf?
Who will save our lives if probably a storm erupts in the sea while fishing?
Who will be the Greatest among us if Jesus dies, who will be the leader?
All their ‘WHO’ question demanded for an answer. Jesus replied them saying, ‘I will pray the Father, and He shall give you another JESUS (Comforter) that He may abide with you forever.
He was a Comforter to His disciples while He was with them and now about to depart He was telling them I will send you another Person that will act like me on your behalf.
Jesus was also saying, ‘I have been with you for just three and half years but when this Person I am sending comes, He will not just stay with you for 5 years, 10 centuries or for a life time but He will be with you FOREVER and He will not only be with you, HE will be living INSIDE you (John 14:16-17).
With these, Jesus comforted His disciples and increased their eagerness to see this SECOND ‘Jesus’.
The Holy Spirit is the internal Jesus. The Holy Spirit is the third Person of the Triune. Owing to the Omniform nature of God, the Holy Spirit is seen all around Scriptures represented by various forms – water, wind, dove, fire, tongue, oil, rod etc.
These representations of the Holy Spirit has a meaning or information they connote:
DOVE – innocence, gentleness and purity
OIL – renewing, refreshing and preserving power; appointment, ordination.
ROD –power of God
TONGUE –the Convicter
WATER – ability to cause to live and revive
WIND/BREATH – Energetic, source of life.
No man gives the Holy Spirit. The Baptism of the Holy Spirit is an exclusive work of Christ. He alone is the Baptizer. Just as God may use a man to lead you to salvation; because a man laid hand on you does not mean that person gave you the Holy Spirit.
John spoke about Jesus, ‘He shall baptize with the Holy Spirit and Fire’-(Matthew 3:11).
The baptism of Water is men’s work to do but baptism in the Holy Spirit is JESUS’.
That’s why a person may be cunning enough to be baptized in water without repentance in order to get a certificate of water baptism from the local church but in the baptism of the Holy Spirit, no one can deceive the GIVER and BAPTIZER (JESUS), He gives to those who merit it ( 1 Corinthians 1 : 14, 16).
John the Baptist was clear enough to say that he was given to baptize men in water but for the Baptism in the Holy Spirit, he was not even fit to loose the BAPTIZER’S shoes or to talk of Doing His Ministry for Him (Matthew 3:11)
In the Old Testament, the Holy Spirit visited. He came upon the people and left; perch now, fly away the next minute; He was On and Off; IN and OUT; Saturday and Tuesday, 12 am IN and 6pm OUT.
He was not resident in them. The Holy Spirit came upon them when God needed a work to be done.
The Holy Spirit was NOT residential in them because the BLOOD of goats and sheep slaughtered for sins could NOT take away their sin but only appeased for sins (to offer little tranquility, to pacify one who is offended for a brief period).
Therefore, the more frequent bulls and goats were slaughtered. And since, these could not cleanse them from sin they were susceptible to being destroyed if a minute sin was found in them bearing on this Holy Spirit.
